,

On Saturday 21 October the 16-strong men’s team faced Riverside in the first round of the National Denny Cup competition. With the Riverside green running at a considerably slower pace than Five Rivers’ carpet, it looked to be a tough match with the eight players playing at Riverside knowing they needed to keep the away scores tight.

At 5 ends Five Rivers led 22-17 overall due to strong starts from the home rink skipped by Jamie Reynolds (9-1) and away rink skipped by Fraser Boynton (5-2). Tom Warner’s rink playing at Riverside struggled over the first 5 ends suffering an 11-15 deficit, after dropping a 6 and a 5 on the first two ends.

The gap closed even more with the overall score at 15 ends 58-57 to Five Rivers. However, at 18 ends Five Rivers were trailing 70-66, the first time they had been behind in the match – this was a combination of Tom’s rink trailling 28-15, Dennis’ rink drawing 15-15 and Fraser’s rink trailing 15-12. However, Jamie’s rink at home had pulled it together and were winning 24-12 at 18 ends.

Over the final three ends the Five Rivers team showed real strength and team spirit with Tom’s team rallying to reduce the deficit on the rink to 29-20 and Dennis’ rink at home winning the final three ends 7-1 to produce a final score of 22-16. Fraser’s team led into the last end 18-15, but after two brilliant bowls by Chris Ralph to secure a three left the rink score 18-18.
